Musically, "Begin Again" is written in the key of Chiliad major, with a tempo of 76 beats per minute. Swift's vocals span from D3 to B4.[eight] Lyrically, it finds Swift falling in dearest again after a failed relationship.[2] According to The Boot website, "It's a cute carol that tells the story of a girl who is pleasantly surprised past a new guy who does everything right that the concluding guy did wrong".[two] Billy Dukes from Taste of Country commented: "For those who believe the arc of songs on 'Reddish' tell a story, the album ends with the sweet satisfaction of love plant on 'Brainstorm Again'. [...] Once again, it'southward her vulnerability and willingness to reveal her battle scars that make this lyric on the Best Taylor Swift 'Red' Lyrics list then palpable and bright".[9] Dukes placed it as the third runway on Red's best lyrics listing, backside "All Too Well" and the title track, respectively.[nine] Billboard magazine affirmed that unlike virtually tracks from Red which notice Swift lamenting on the end of relationships, "Begin Once more" talks virtually "finding hope at the end of that tumultuous period".[10] According to the publication, the singer's vocals are on a "blatant, girlish vocal" tone and is reminiscent of her contributions to The Hunger Games soundtrack.[10]

"Brainstorm Again" received universal acclamation from music critics, many of whom praised Swift's songwriting. Writing for Taste of State, Billy Dukes gave the vocal a 4 star rating out of v, describing it as "a cleansing breath that hopefully foreshadows the truthful tone of her album".[9] Grady Smith of Entertainment Weekly wrote the vocal is "a well-crafted love story" and noted Swift'due south talent "at taking a single moment in time and letting information technology unfold similar a popular-up storybook."[eleven] Jessica Sager of Popcrush gave the vocal 4 out of 5 stars, proverb that "Swift paints a bright motion picture of a outset date following a rough breakup in 'Brainstorm Once more' — and she sounds like a young adult female...She's not settling, whether in her honey life or her studio sessions. And for that, Taylor Swift, we salute you."[12] Matt Bjorke gave four out of 5 stars as well for Roughstock, complimenting that "The song is a vast improvement for Taylor. A carol that'southward neither in-your-confront or sounding like its from a twelve year old".[13]

The Kick noted that the story Swift painted was "sweetness" and it'due south a "beautiful ballad".[2] Justin Proper of Under The Gun Review praised Swift for knowing "how to keep her core audience happy, and that is exactly what "Begin Again" accomplishes", also maxim that the song gave him a "sensation of relief".[14] MuchMusic lauded Swift, stating "while she is more than than capable of releasing the carefree, jump-around-your-room-with-a-hairbrush break upwardly songs like "We Are Never Ever Getting Dorsum Together," she also has the pen of a poet and knows how to craft emotionally gut-wrenching songs that speak to her millions of fans."[15] Notwithstanding, Kevin John Coyne of Land Universe gave a mixed review, giving the vocal a grade "B". He lamented how Swift's songs never leave the topic of boys, saying "as Swift continues to grow older, it'southward condign more troublesome that her sense of self-worth and happiness is e'er inextricably linked to whatever man is currently the object of her affection."[sixteen] "Begin Again" was included in Billboard 's listing of Best songs of 2012 where it was ranked at number six.

Music video [edit]

Synopsis [edit]

The video starts with Swift standing on a bridge while pensively gazing across the water and remembering a lost beloved. She so takes a walk along the Île de la Cité in Paris,[ citation needed ] wearing a Ruby-red dress with white flower appliques and blueish peep toes and sits abreast the river Seine. The video draws comparing to that of singer Adele's music video "Someone Similar You" and Swift'due south own "Back to December" (only much happier).[26]

Swift then rides a bicycle, wearing a blue and white floral brim with white cat flats with sun glasses on and bikes downwardly a Cobblestone street. She goes shopping and tries on new clothes, which is spliced with shots of Swift singing to a human being (Vladimir Perrin). In a flashback, she recalls her get-go coming together with the man at a café while sipping cappuccino. He starts taking snapshots of her with his Leica M6. They and so have a bitter-sweet chat, laughing and giggling at each other. The post-obit clips shows Swift sitting at a park and sampling pastries. Information technology also shows Swift walking by the Seine. The clip ends with the two walking side by side, equally Swift allows herself to "begin again."

Difference from lyrics [edit]

Directed by Philip Andelman and produced by Arthur Cantin,[27] the story in the video deviates from the song's lyrical narrative in several respects. While the lyrics recount the narrator's (Swift) trepidation of a first date after a bad breakup, the video instead relates a chance meeting in a cafe in Paris. In the video, Swift is seated at a berth, doodling in a modest notebook when a Frenchman at another table takes involvement and introduces himself. Missing from the video are the Swift's initial moments in the cafe, where her date has arrived early to wait for her, greets her, then helps her into her chair, displaying kindness and respect that was plain absent-minded from her erstwhile human relationship. Late in the song, the restaurant come across draws to a conclusion while the couple walks to Swift'southward car.

The vocal lyrics draw a touching moment when Swift feels an urge to talk about her previous relationship, but before she can, her date starts describing his family's Christmas moving picture watching tradition. It is the pivotal moment in "Begin Again", where Swift realizes she is no longer jump to her sometime relationship, "And for the showtime time, what'southward past is past". In the video, instead of a clear finish to the engagement, Swift is shown walking her cycle alongside her new friend down a cobblestone road. The couple manifestly is non walking to her car as described in the song lyrics, every bit she walks with her wheel. In the video, it is clear that Swift is feeling love for her new friend, while the song lyrics go out information technology to the listener to decide whether Swift is finding dearest in her new friend, or is more mostly reclaiming her ability to dear through the experience of this date.

Reception [edit]

Amusement Weekly thought the video was "another classic bloodshot Swift joint," writing: "Though her boyfriend doesn't laugh at her jokes and bores her with stories nearly his family unit'southward Christmas film-watching traditions, she finds the ultimate salve: Wandering through the streets of Paris, chuckling with handsome dudes in a café (and probably snacking on snails or something). It'south a lovely clip, but a niggling flake sleepy. Likewise, in that location'southward something almost it that recalls 'Back to December' — is it the color palette, or only the general moodiness?".[28] [29] To engagement, the video has over 190 one thousand thousand views on YouTube.
