- In his interviews, he has credited his school friend William Aston for introducing him to rapping. He had heard Aston freestyling and had approached him. Aston encouraged him to give it a try.
- He was discovered by producer and DJ Don Cannon after he heard his track on the radio played by DJ Diamond Kuts. Cannon passed a word about his talent to DJ Drama and they signed up Lil Uzi for their record label, Generation Now.
- He decided to adopt Lil Uzi moniker because of his rapping style. One of his friends had told him that he rapped like a machine gun and he decided to adapt Lil Uzi as his stage name.
